David Letterman’s Net Worth, Love Life, and Career

David Letterman was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, on April 12, 1947, to two sisters, one older and the other younger.

His father, Harry Joseph Letterman, was a florist. Dorothy Marie Letterman Mengering, his mother and the church secretary at the Second Presbyterian Church of Indianapolis, came on Letterman’s show on occasion, particularly around holidays and birthdays.

Letterman grew up in Indianapolis’ Broad Ripple area. He enjoyed collecting model cars, particularly racers. Harry Joseph Letterman, when David was a child, suffered a heart attack at the age of 36. Letterman’s fear of losing his father persisted as he got older. In 1973, at the age of 57, the elder Letterman died after a second heart attack. Letterman began his career in broadcasting as a newscaster and announcer at WBST, a 10-watt campus radio station that is now part of Indiana Public Radio.

David was raised in north Indianapolis. He went to high school in his hometown before attending Ball State University in Muncie. His college major was Radio and Television. Since his boyhood, he has been a devotee of model automobiles and racing vehicles. David received his sense of humor from his father’s propensity to tell jokes and be the light of the party. David’s father survived his first heart attack when he was 36 years old.
